Marxism in A Doll̫̉s House by Henrik Ibsen - 1667 Words
A remarkable trait in which literature embodies is the ability to capture and preserve cultural and societal beliefs. One may read a literary work published in the 1800ââ¬â¢s and observe how society has evolved since then, or in contrast observe how society has digressed since then. Regardless of the genre and content, one may still infer when the piece was produced based on the diction and syntax of said piece. This is possible because literature is essentially written picture- it is a time machine for your conscience, a window to the past. This beautiful quality can be exemplified through analyzing ââ¬Å"A Dollââ¬â¢s House,â⬠a play written by Henrik Ibsen in 1879 that portrays a Marxist view of society and oppresses women unreadily seen today.â⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦When Torvald enters, she approaches him for cash so that she may ââ¬Å"hang the bills in gilt paperâ⬠as decorations (787). She refuses to make the decorations by hand as she had previously don e the year before because that constituted as ââ¬Å"thinking poorâ⬠(787). Nora feels that because she has moved up in social classes, her and Torvald are able ââ¬Å"let themselves go a bitâ⬠(786), despite having previously saved every penny they stumbled across, working peculiar jobs to receive an income. In a sense the tree symbolizes her newfound obsession to money, not wanting anyone to see it until she lavishly decorates it to display their wealth. Contrary to Nora, Torvald is much more reserved with his money. However he too excessively builds his perspective of life merely on cash and the status it gains him. Upon Noraââ¬â¢s return from shopping, he asks if ââ¬Å"his little spendthrift has been out throwing away money again,â⬠emphasizing that they ââ¬Å"really canââ¬â¢t go squanderingâ⬠(785). Nora believes since Torvald received a raise, they can borrow money until he is promoted; but Torvald obdurately replies, telling her to never borrow as ââ¬Å"something of freedom is lost from a home thatââ¬â¢s founded on borrowing and debtâ⬠(786). Torvald also associates freedom with money. He can be quoted stating ââ¬Å"[it is] a wonderful feeling [to know] oneââ¬â¢s got a safe secure job with a comfortable salaryâ⬠(787), just as how Nora claims to be ââ¬Å"so light and happyâ⬠(789) because they ââ¬Å"have stacks of money and not a care inShow MoreRelatedA New World for Women: A Dollhouse by Henrik Ibsen1089 Words à |à 4 PagesA new world for women Henrik Ibsenââ¬â¢s play, ââ¬Å"A Dollhouseâ⬠is centered in the late 19th century following the time women seek more of their independence and greater freedom.
